“Grounding in the body provides an anchor to steady your attention instead of losing your centre.” Oren Jay Sofer
Grounding is a self-soothing skill that involves many different techniques or activities. I am starting this month’s posts with grounding because I will be introducing breathwork, visualization, and the use of a container in the next three posts. Grounding practices can be used when you feel triggered, when you are under periods of high stress, or when you are practicing regulating your nervous system. Grounding practices can calm overwhelming emotions, help regain perspective from spiraling thoughts, and reduce tension, anxiety, and panic sensations in the body. Grounding is about staying connected to your body, reading it for signs of stress, and being able to use practices to elicit relaxation.
